Chapter 7!!!

Chapter 7 is full of events, leaving us with a lot to process. First, analyze the characters involved in the love triangle - Tom, Daisy and Gatsby. How have Tom and Gatsby evolved/changed in this chapter? Also, what have we learned about Daisy's level of commitment and character? (In terms of the love triangle.) These questions lead to the relationships and love in the novel. Specifically look at the car crash scene - what kind of effects will the car crash have on Tom and Daisy's relationship? Also, which love do you think is stronger? (Daisy and Tom or Daisy and Gatsby.) Do you think Tom is upset about Daisy and Gatsby's love because he isn't used to "losing" or he truly loves Daisy? You obviously don't have to address all the questions, but hopefully they will help focus the discussion.

Chapter Eight

How does Gatsby's insistance to live in the past contribute to his eventual death? Based on Nick's reflection on page six, "..Gatsby turned out all right at the end..." did Gatsby accomplish his goal as discussed in class? Feel free to include any additional thoughts on the events in chapter eight.

Chapter 5

In Chapter 5, Daisy and Gatsby are finallly spending time together. What do you think the weather, throughout the chapter, suggests about their relationship? Also, what do you think about the way Gatsby approached Nick to spend time with Daisy? How has Gatsby's behavior changed?

In Chapter 6, Gatsby's drive to pursue his personal dream is confirmed. What does his personal dream consist of, will he regret it, and does his dream coincide with how we first perceived him?How does this compare to Prufrock's personal desire and dreams?

Chapter 5

On page 45 Nick says,"The party has begun," when the the party seemed to be underway already. What is the significance of him saying this ? Also, how does the party reflect the soceity and its current oppsites?

Chapter 4

In Chapter 4, Gatsby tells Nick all about his life. At first Nick questions the legitimacy of Gatsby's stories/accomplishments. Is it valid to attribute this skepticism to Nick's previous experiences? Also, Nick describes the types of people that were at Gatsby's party. What kind of credibility do these people have based on the rumors Nick was exposed to? Are "East and West" distinguished here?
